January 31, 2008 Todays chamber speakers were Phil Nathan with H & R  Block, and Kathy Furlan, our Cruise 1 coordinator.

Phils motto is ‘its not how much you get, its how much you get to keep’.  Phil has an impressive background in marketing and helping businesses, and he’s here to help you with your taxes. 

Phil took some time today to help us with deductions and credits, and how we can save on our taxes.  For small businesses your schedule C is the main document and indicator of your profit and loss.  Did you know you can add your spouse on payroll to get social security?  Or put your kids to work! 

What about home office deductions?  If you have a mortgage its a good idea because you can write off a part of your home.  It must be a specific area and you deduct the square footage off your taxes.

AMT – Alternative mimimum tax – is the old millionaires deduction that has been expanded to everybody!  Ask Phil about it.  Also ask Phil about the difference vs employees and contractors because you can significantly reduce taxes and keep that money you worked so hard for.

Also a word of warning – Talk to a tax professional If you had a foreclosure last year…there are some dos and donts you need to know.
